“And his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.” Eph 4:11-12
Holy Orders is the Sacrament through which the mission entrusted by Christ to his Apostles continues to be exercised in the Church until the end of time: thus it is the sacrament of apostolic ministry. It includes three degrees or “orders”: deacon, priest, and bishop. All three confer a permanent, sacramental character. Catechism of the Catholic Church 1536
